Running your own indie game studio can be challenging. Although it’s great working for myself, it’s also hard to untrain myself from years of answering to a boss. I don’t have someone asking me if that thing is done yet or looking at my calendar with a bunch of meetings to discuss other meetings. I’m responsible for myself. If I don’t schedule something, it doesn’t get done.
Some people are highly organized, have a schedule, and know exactly what they have to do down to the minute. Unfortunately, I’m not that organized. There are days when I just want to sit and watch YouTube or Netflix. No one is going to fire me or write me up. However, there are things that I do on a regular basis that help me to kickstart my day.
Morning Routine: Kickstarting the Day
The first thing I do every morning is vacuum my house and feed my cats. It forces me to get out of bed and start the day. I despise vacuuming, but my cats are geniuses at finding little snacks on the ground that aren’t really snacks. This routine, as mundane as it sounds, is crucial. It’s a simple task that gets me moving and sets the tone for the day.
Once I’m out of bed, cats are fed, and the floor is vacuumed, then I turn on my computer. It’s nothing revolutionary. I don’t have a magical formula or a bunch of tools to use for productivity. I just wake up and get out of bed. I think that’s the first step.
What do you do to get yourself out of bed?
